BCJH band wins "Sweepstakes" honor at UIL contest

The Bay City Junior High Honor Band competed in the University Interscholastic League Concert and Sight Reading Contest at Needville High School on April 18th. The students had worked hard in rehearsals learning music selected from the Texas Prescribed Music List to perform for judges at the contest. Competing against a musical standard instead of other schools, the BCJH Honor Band received "Superior" ratings in both the Concert and Sight Reading portions of the contest earning them the much coveted "Sweepstakes" trophy.  

The Band is conducted by Chuck Herber and will have their final concert of the year on May 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in the Keye Ingram Auditorium at BCJH.

Extra-credit is extra-fun at BCJH

BCJH sixth graders in Nicole Rivera, Cynthia Simpson, Helen Knezek and Cindy Simpson's classes created piñatas for an extra-credit project at the end of the last grading period. The project was an extension of the CSCOPE curriculum unit on "Formulating Connections with Informational Texts."

Projects were judged and the winners were:
Grand Prize: drum - Robert W
1st Place: colorful one-eyed creature - Tommy V
2nd Place: princess doll - Abigail R
3rd Place: strawberry - Juan H

Students examined many forms of informational texts representing a variety of topics. The classes compared and contrasted author's purpose, organizational patterns, and synthesized and made connections between multiple informational texts with similar ideas.

One text examined was "how to make a piñata." Students also observed a YouTube video clip demonstrating piñata construction. Then students made the piñatas to demonstrate their understanding of procedural texts.
