The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least-served students who are in the middle:

  • will succeed in rigorous curriculum,
  • will complete a rigorous college preparatory path,
  • will enter mainstream activities of the school,
  • will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and
  • will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society

AVID's systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase schoolwide/districtwide learning and performance.

Questions about AVID:

1.  How long has AVID been in Bay City ISD?

AVID began in our school district in the fall of 2007, with an 8th grade class at BCJH and a 9th grade class at BCHS.  As those students have promoted, they have remained with their "AVID Family."  We have since added a 7th grade class at BCJH.

2.  How is a student selected to be in the AVID Elective class?

Students are nominated by their teachers, counselors, and/or administrators, and are then interviewed by the AVID Site Team at each campus, who have attended various AVID trainings and are familiar with its philosophies.  We always are on the lookout for students who show academic potential!

3.  What can I do to get involved?

We are always looking for Guest Speakers.  If you are an adult who has built a successful career for yourself, please call Mrs. Roberts (at 245-5771 x 7060) or email her at sroberts@bcblackcats.net and volunteer to come and speak.  Our three AVID classes meet back-to-back, from 8:35 -- 11:20 daily, and we like to schedule Guest Speakers on Fridays, twice a month.
