Grant awarded to BCISD for Communities in Schools initiative

Bay City Independent School District, along with Communities in Schools (CIS) of Brazoria County, has been awarded a Texas Education Agency grant to expand Communities in Schools to Bay City ISD.

Communities in Schools works directly in schools to build relationships that empower students to stay in school and succeed in life. CIS school-based staff partner with teachers to identify challenges students face in class or at home and coordinate with community partners to bring outside resources inside schools.

CIS in Texas is administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). CIS staff work year-round, full-time, and on school campuses. BCISD is partnering with CIS of Brazoria County, which currently serves 6,500 students over 90 program sites in nine school districts.

CIS of Brazoria County programs include help for at-risk youth to help them stay in school; assists students to stay drug-free and avoid gangs; and provides after-school programs for economically disadvantaged youth.

“One of the big first steps CIS of Brazoria County will undertake is hiring staff for placement in BCISD and assessing the needs of the district,” said BCISD Assistant Superintendent Lisa Moya. “Job postings are up, and we expect hiring to happen early in 2020, and the programs to begin early next semester.”

The six components of CIS are: supportive guidance and counseling; parental involvement; Health and Human Services; Academics; College and Career Awareness; and Enrichment Activities.

The CIS Mental Health Program includes these activities: Advocacy; Crisis Intervention; Trauma Groups; Coping Skill Building; and Mental Health Support.

“I am excited for our families that we are bringing CIS into the district,” said BCISD Superintendent Dr. Marshall Scott III. “CIS traditionally focuses on building relationships first. Once you have strong relationships among students and staff, that trust and faith nurtures academic and personal growth.”
