Bay City swimmers, divers compete at district
The Bay City High School Blackcat and Ladycat Swim and Dive Team competed at the District 27-5A meet on Jan. 21-22.
The meet was held at the Victoria Aquatic Center, and featured competitors from El Campo, Victoria East, Sweeny, Wharton, Brazosport, Victoria West, East Bernard, Needville, Van Vleck, Columbia and Palacios.
The combined Blackcat and Ladycat score earned Bay City second place overall with 160 points. El Campo won the overall combined score with 272.5 points.
The Blackcats and Lady Cats won third place overall in the boys and girls divisions. El Campo won the boys' division, while Victoria West finished first in the girls' division.
The Blackcats had two individual gold medals. Senior Glory Vargas posted a 1:08.30 to take home the Girls 100-yard Butterfly, and freshman Megan Moya turned in a 6:01.79 to win the Girls 500-yard Freestyle.
Bay City also won two relay races. The team of Vargas, Moya, Suhana Khondker and Lucy Frick won the Girls 400-yard Freestyle Relay in 4:12.64, and the team of Matthew Brooks, Chris Peralta, Daniel Dye and Michael Vargas won the Boys 400-yard Freestyle Relay in 3:40.97.
In addition, Clare Button won the Co-District 27-5A Boys Diving Coach of the Year honors with a coach from Victoria. This is the second year in a row Button has won the award.
