Bay City swimmers, divers compete at district

The Bay City High School Blackcat and Ladycat Swim and Dive Team competed at the District 27-5A meet on Jan. 21-22.

The meet was held at the Victoria Aquatic Center, and featured competitors from El Campo, Victoria East, Sweeny, Wharton, Brazosport, Victoria West, East Bernard, Needville, Van Vleck, Columbia and Palacios.

The combined Blackcat and Ladycat score earned Bay City second place overall with 160 points. El Campo won the overall combined score with 272.5 points.

The Blackcats and Lady Cats won third place overall in the boys and girls divisions. El Campo won the boys' division, while Victoria West finished first in the girls' division.

The Blackcats had two individual gold medals. Senior Glory Vargas posted a 1:08.30 to take home the Girls 100-yard Butterfly, and freshman Megan Moya turned in a 6:01.79 to win the Girls 500-yard Freestyle.

Bay City also won two relay races. The team of Vargas, Moya, Suhana Khondker and Lucy Frick won the Girls 400-yard Freestyle Relay in 4:12.64, and the team of Matthew Brooks, Chris Peralta, Daniel Dye and Michael Vargas won the Boys 400-yard Freestyle Relay in 3:40.97.

In addition, Clare Button won the Co-District 27-5A Boys Diving Coach of the Year honors with a coach from Victoria. This is the second year in a row Button has won the award.

BCHS swim coach Bob Button summed up the district meet with the following comments:

"We knew the kids had put in the work and were really ready to swim well, but they just got a little carried away on those medley relays.

The negative was obvious.  We lost those team points and neither relay advanced to region.

The positive was that we all saw how huge our time drops were and that all we had to do was swim everything legal and we were going to have a great meet.

I'm so proud of the way these kids have trained this year.  The strength work and water work they put in really showed in the late stages of their races. When that last relay came around, we were able to step up and do the job.

The San Antonio region meet will be an old-school test for us.  Prelims and finals will be on the same day for girls (Thursday, the 4th) and boys (Saturday, the 6th).  There will also be some kids swimming back-to-back events, just like we had to, back in the day."
